Morden's Hampshire 1695

Symbols Settlements are marked on Morden's map of Hampshire with a circle and additional elements; there are at least three sorts of symbol. There is no table of symbols explaining what each means. We have referred to the three grades of settlement as hamlet, village or parish, and town, for sake of some term when discussing them.

city or town; circle and group of buildings eg three towers; name in lower case upright text.
The size of the group of buildings is not a safe guide to the size of the town - Petersfield looks bigger than Winchester!
A few of the symbols have a cross atop the tower; towns Romsey and Christchurch, villages Wherwell and Titchfield, and also Titchfield House. This seems to indicate a religious foundation. But Winchester, with cathedral has no cross.

village or parish, or maybe a house; circle and tower; name in lower case italic text.
hamlet, or just a house or farm, or other small settlement; circle; name in lower case italic text.
Notes about symbols.
