MAP FEATURES
title cartouche
wreath cartouche

Printed upper right is a wreath cartouche, tied by a bow at the top, different leaves down each side:-
DIE INSELN UM PORTSMOUTH Nro = 678

orientation
up is N

The map is printed with North at the top of the sheet.

scale lines
scale

Printed lower right are two scale lines:-
Deutsche oder geographische Meilen 15 auf einem Grad.
Europaische Seemeilen 20 auf einem Grad.
each chequered in quarters, labelled 1/4, 1/2, 1. The european scale is of leagues not nautical miles, the 1 league = 3 nautical miles = 50.8 mm gives a scale 1 to 109440; the map scale is about:-
1 to 110000
1.5 nautical miles to 1 inch
(2 miles to 1 inch)

lat and long scales
Printed in the map borders are scales of latitude and longitude for a rectangular projection; chequered in minutes, labelled at 15 minute intervals expressed in degrees and fractions, eg:-
50 3/4
for 50d 45m. The longitude of Portsmouth is about 16d 24 or 25m E. Doing a few sums: the longitude is based on a prime meridian in the Canary Islands, about 17 1/2 degrees W of the modern Greenwich meridian. The map includes from 16d 13m to 16d 49m E of the Canaries, from 50d 40m to 50d 56m N; Hampshire from Stokes Bay to Langstone Harbour, from the coast to level with Bishops Waltham; the north east corner of the Isle of Wight; and a few features in neighbouring West Sussex as far as Selsey Bill and Pagham.

sea area
sea plain
sandbanks
buoys

The sea are is plain. The only sea area labelled is:-
Hayling Bay
Sandbanks are outlined by a dotted line, and might be labelled, eg:-
Mother Bank
THE HORSE / Loose Shifting Sand / THE DEAN
Buoys are drawn, looking like a conical buoy? Some are named and described, eg:-
Nomardsland Buoy
Warner Buoy / White
on the starboard side of the eastern approach channel leaving Spithead, and a series of buoys on the south east corner of Horse and Dean Sand, marking the port side of same route:-
Horse Buoy / Black
Elbow Buoy / Black
Third Buoy / Black
Fourth Buoy / Black
Outer Buoy / Black

coast line
coast form lines
harbours
islands

The coast line is emphasised by form lines.
The form lines are continued into harbours, round the three 'islands'.
PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR
is labelled and has islands, of which
Whale I.
Horsea I.
Pewit I.
are labelled. The main channels and some islands in Langstone Harbour are shown as are those around Thorney Island which is drawn well separated from the mainland. Some channels are labelled, eg:-
Emsworth Channel
Islands:-
PORTSEA ISLD.
HAYLING ISLAND
THORNEY ISLD.
are all drawn as distinct islands.

coastal defence
castles
fortifications

Various elements of Hampshire's coastal defences and related features are noticed:-
Redoubt [square fortification]
Hasler H. [large H shape building]
[fortifications at Gosport]
Magazine [the then new magazine at Priddys Hard]
Blackhouse [ie Blockhouse Fort?]
The Lines [fortification on north shore of Portsea Island]
DOCK YARD [fortification]
[fortification around Portsmouth]
Southsea Cas. [fortification]
Cumberland Fort [fortification]

rivers
bridges

River estuaries have form lines continued from the coast. Inland river are drawn by wiggly lines. None? are labelled. The Meon, Wallington, and Ems can be recognised, with a number of smaller streams and tributaries. The engraving of rivers appears to be a little careless in the way roads and rivers cross?
Bridges might be implied by roads crossing and interrupting streams. For example the two bridges at Fareham over the Wallington River are clearly marked; roads west to Southwick, and to Portchester past Cams Hall. Ports Bridge is not apparent. A bridge near Waltham Chase is labelled:-
Silver Lake Br.

relief
hill hachuring

Relief is indicated by hill hachuring. Notice the valley of the stream running south from Rowner to the Solent: prettily engraved. Some hills are labelled, eg:-
Portsdown
Idsworth Down
Also notice the hachuring along the coast line by Stubbington, where the coast is a little steeper.

woods
forests

Woodland is indicated by areas of various weights of dots. These might be labelled, eg:-
FOREST OF BERE [East Bere Forest]
Horndean Holt

parks
Parks might be drawn in outline, pecked inside, perhaps with a house, and perhaps labelled, eg:-
Bedhampton Park
on a hill north of Havant. Some parks have vestigial fence palings around the outline, eg:-
Southwick Park
Roch Court

county
The county boundary is a dot dash line. The adjacent county:-
SUSSEX
is labelled, but not Hampshire. The appearance of the map, detail in Hampshire not Sussex, suggests it is one of a series about the county, not needing the county name.

settlements
street map

Settlements are mostly marked by groups of blocks, differentiated size and by style of labelling. There is not enough map to be sure what is intended, however:-
town     group of blocks on roads making a sort of street map; labelled in upright block caps, eg:-
PORTSMOUTH
FAREHAM
TITCHFIELD
village     perhaps a house symbol; labelled in upright lowercase text, eg:-
Wickham
Alverstoke
hamlet     a block or two; labelled in italic lowercase text, eg:-
Funtley
Boarhunt

roads
turnpike roads

Roads are drawn by double line, solid or dotted for fenced or unfenced. Larger roads are drawn broader with one line a little bolder; lesser roads are drawn narrower. A whole network of roads is shown.
I have not been able to check on what turnpike gates did exist, but I notice:-
New gate [N of Rowner]
Portsea Gate [N of Ports Bridge]
Hilsea Bar [at Hilsea]
miscellaneous

mills
water mills

A water mill is marked by a rayed circle on a stream on the east side of Hayling Island, labelled:-
Mill
