commentary:	From Eastleigh 73 miles from Waterloo, originally to Gosport and a ferry to Portsmouth. The line now goes to Portsmouth via Fareham and Cosham and the old branch line from Fareham no longer carries passengers; the last section is lifted. A freight line still exists as far as Bedenham Sidings (87m 40ch). Opened 7 February 1842; it had opened the previous year but was immediately closed because of problems with tunnels.
