Blaeu's map, published in the Netherlands, carries the royal coat of arms of Charles I of England and Scotland, and motto:- HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSEbehind the arms are the flags of the two nations; the red on white cross of St George for England, and the white on blue saltire of St Andrew for Scotland. The blazon is:- Quarterly 1. and 4., quarterly i and iiii azure three fleur de lys or (France), ii and iii gules three lions passant guardant or (England); 2. or a lion rampant within a tressure flory counter flory gules (Scotland); 3. azure a harp or stringed argent (Ireland). in columns on each side of the map are strapwork cartouches with coats of arms of Earls of Winchester and of Earls of Southampton, each with a caption. On the left:- Cliton a Saxon Earle of Wincester Saer Quincy Earle of Wincester Hugh Spencer Earle of Wincester Ludowick Bruget Earle of Winchester William Paulet Marques of Wincester On the right:- Bogo or Beavous Earle of Southampton a famous warrier against ye Normans.
