OGILBY TITLE CARTOUCHES ANALYSED |
These notes about the title cartouches on the 100 plates for the whole of England and Wales are made from a facsimile edition of John Ogilby's Britannia of 1675:-
: 1975: Ogilby's Road Maps of England and Wales: Osprey Books:: ISBN 0 85045 034 9 |
|
The title cartouches on John Ogilby's strip maps of the roads
of England and Wales are placed top centre of each double page
plate. On a typical six scroll plate, the left two and right two
scrolls are the full height of the plate, the middle two are
shorter with the cartouche above. |
|
Route | The body of the cartouche has a title and description of the page's route with road distances; plate 26 for example:- |
The Continuation of the Road from / LONDON to the LANDS END / Plate 2d. / Com~encing at Andover com~: Hants & / Extending to Crookhorn com~: Somerset. / Containing 67 miles 6 furlongs, vizt. / to SALISBURY 18 miles to Shaftesbury 19 miles 4 furl: / to Sherborn 15 miles 4 furl: & to Crookhorn 14 mi: 6 furl: |
|
The text panel is sometimes surrounded by a picture frame,
sometimes is drawn on a drape, mostly is just in a rectangular
box or outlined by the surrounding decoration. Bottom centre of
many cartouches is the royal coat of arms of
Charles II, with a crown above. The surrounding
decoration falls into two groups of designs; decorative scrollery
or 17th century illustrations. |
|
Scrolls etc. | You probably need to be an expert in 17th century decorative art to spot significance in the different sorts of decorative scroll work. The scrolls are heavy and convoluted sculptural shapes down the sides and under the text panel, meeting at the crown on the coat of arms. The scrolls themselves frame the text without other border. |
Most commonly the scrolls include bunches or swags of fruit and foliage - 31 plates; 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 33, 35, 40, 49, 50, 58, 59, 64, 68, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 84, 86, 94, 96, 97, 99. (pl.97 is a Hampshire plate.)
In a few plates the swags of fruit dominate the scrolls - 3 plates; 5, 55, 62
A couple of scrolls have fishes as well as fruit - 2 plates; 24, 69.
The scrolls might have heraldic female figures, perhaps winged, staring out sideways - 4 plates; 8, 14, 48, 90.
Or the scrolls might have a face or mask peeking out - 4 plates; 9, 41, 54, 66.
Some scrolls have a winged cherub each side - 5 plates; 11, 39, 51, 56, 81. (pl.39 and pl.51 are Hampshire plates.)
A number of scrolls are plain scroll work - 12 plates; 22, 34, 38, 44, 46, 57, 60, 65, 67, 83, 95, 98. (pl.83 is a Hampshire plate.)
Instead of scrolls there might be bundles of leaves, with a litle scroll work - 2 plates; 29, 43.
And there is a plate with cornucopiae of fruit - 1 plate; 53. (pl.53 is a Hampshire plate.)
Total = 64 scroll cartouches
ILLUSTRATIVE CARTOUCHES |
