Introduction
Paterson's Hampshire 1785-93 |
|
These notes are made from preliminary pages and road strip maps from
the road book, Paterson's British Itinerary, by Captain Daniel
Paterson, published by Carrington Bowles, 1785 and an edition
published by Bowles and Carver, 1793.
The pages studied are in the Map Collection of Hampshire CC
Museums Service. This study concentrates upon what can be seen
from the maps; studies of the background of mapping in England,
and map makers have been published elsewhere.

Editions and Pagination
|
The map sheets seen have a footer, either:-
Printed for the Proprietor CARINGTON BOWLES, London, 3 Jan. 1785.
or:-
Printed for the Proprietors BOWLES & CARVER, London
which is after Bowles's death, 1793.
Each single map page has 2 strips of road, numbered separately, on
each side of the sheet.
Volume 1
In the first volume pagination starts 1and2 on the recto page; ie
the first sheet has 1and2 on obverse, 3and4 on reverse. (The
highest number on the sheet is 4n, for n=1 to ...). Page headers
are, verso and recto:-
PATERSON'S (VOL. I.) ITINERARY,
DIRECT (VOL. I.) ROADS.
Volume 2
In the second volume pagination starts with 1and2 on a verso page;
ie the first sheet is ?prelims on obverse, 1and2 on reverse.
(The highest number on a sheet is 4n-2, for n=1 to ...). Page
headers are, verso and recto:-
PATERSON'S (VOL. II.) ITINERARY,
CROSS (VOL. II.) ROADS.
According to the general map in volume I, 1785 edition:-
A New and GENERAL VIEW of the DIRECT ROADS OF ENGLAND & WALES
as described in PATERSON'S British Itinerary
the volumes are arranged a little differently to the analysis above.
The roads for the SW part of the country, divided by a line from
London to the Birkenhead coast, are in volume 1, and those for the
NE part in volume 2. However, cross roads for the SW are in a
later section of volume 2; this includes a road map for Hampshire.
Notice that a new route is started with a semicircular cartouche
below the strip map in which there is a title, which is not repeated
on following sheets. If a route finishes on a page a new route may
be begun on the same sheet. The title (or implied title) is given
first in each route listed below.
The strip maps contain a topographical detail of the area around
each road, not just the strip of road alone.
|
Hampshire plates |
The maps and itineraries presented here are from both the 1785 and
1793 editions; the plates and descriptive pages that concern
Hampshire are listed below. (Note that each map plate has two
numbers, one for each strip.

from the bottom of the section of text upwards line by line;
matching the arrangement of the strip maps which read up the page in
the direction of travel so that you are looking ahead from
