Introduction
Senex's Hampshire 1719-57 |
|
These notes are made from sheets from the 1719 and 1757 editions of
John Senex's strip maps of roads in Hampshire. The maps are
derived from Ogilby's maps of 1675. Part of the motivation
in reproducing the road book was to make it more practical for
the traveller to use, make it a size that would fit the pocket.
John Senex was one of several map makers racing to produce a handy
road book in the early 18th century.
The strip maps are in the Map Collection of Hampshire County
Council Museums Service. This study concentrates upon what can be seen
from the maps; studies of the background of mapping in England,
and map makers have been published elsewhere.
Transcripts from Senex's introductory material to the road book
are included from volume 1 of the road book in a private collection,
to whose owners I am grateful.

Editions |
There are many editions of the strip maps from Senex's road
book; I'm still not certain just what is what, but (I think):-
|
1719 |
Senex 1719 - roads on scrolls; plain on reverse, ie single
sided; paginated similarly to Ogilby; plate numbers bottom right
|
1742 |
Senex 1742 - maps as 1719
|
1757 |
Senex 1757 - roads on scrolls; double sided, printed obv and
rev; paginated similarly to Ogilby; but from pl.40 are new plate
numbers top left and top right; references to connecting plates at
foot of page
|
1762 |
Senex 1767 - roads on scrolls, but less ornate;
different pagination
|
1770 |
Senex 1770 - as 1767
|
1775 |
Senex 1775 - roads in boxes not scrolls; imprint of
Sayer and Bennett 1775
|
