Settlements are marked in a variety of ways, and are usually named.
city: City are drawn as street plans (as are major towns);
they are labelled in block caps.
In the plan of Winchester the East gate is evident, and
Hue Church ie Hyde, and Little St. Bartholomew
are labelled.
In the Southampton plans you can see the gate by the water, the
street leading to the Ferry, and gardens behind some
of the houses.
The gate at the entrance to Portsmouth is clealy drawn.
town: Towns are drawn with rows of buildings beside
streets; labelled with lower case upright text. |
village: (on road) is drawn with a few houses along the
road; labelled with lower case italic text.
village: (off road) is drawn with a church, which is mostly
what you see as you travel.
Some of the little street plans of towns or villages are
very attractive.
house: small building, or larger. Some have the owner's
name eg Ld Anstey's house.
