Kitchin's Hampshire 1751

Settlements are marked with a circle and additional elements. Three sizes of settlement are distinguished.

Notice the entry in the table of symbols:-
A. Part of Hampshire
which refers to the out of county area south of Haslemere, which is labelled on the map with the 'A'.

city marked with a circle, tower, buildings, named in block caps, eg:-
WINCHESTER
whose symbol is the same as for a borough town, with 2 stars.

town, borough marked by a circle, tower, buildings, star, named in lower case, upright text.
Burough Towns with the No. of
Members they send to Parliamt. by Stars.
eg Andover with 2 members.

town, market marked by a circle, tower, buildings, but no stars, named in lower case, upright text.
Market Towns
eg Bishops Waltham.

village or parish marked by a circle, named in lower case italic text.
Parishes or Villages
eg Silchester.
