Symbols
In the explanation below, Norden's term, from his table of symbols, is in italic.
town; several buildings around the dot and circle, name in block caps. Notice the weathercock on the tower.
village; a single tower or building to the left of the dot and circle, name in lower case.
hamlet; a short vertical line from the top of the dot and circle, name in lower case.
chapel; a short vertical line, with a horizontal line to one side, ie half a cross, off the top of the dot and circle, name in lower case.
Note about Holy ghost chapel in Camden's Britannia
country house; a tower either side of the dot and circle, name in lower case; house of best reception.
lesser country house, just the dot and circle, name in lower case.
A dot and circle might mark any sort of feature.
ruin; the dot and circle cancelled by a slash.
castle; two towers with a flag, no dot and circle.
hillfort (generally); a hatched circle like a modern tumulus symbol, with a flag.
monastic place a cross atop the dot and circle.
beacon; a hill with beacon posts on top. Some are named.

His original list of symbols included:-
'... Howses of best receite, Ordinarie howses of means,
... Old trenches and fortes, ... Woody Places, Devision
for Hundreds, Rivers, Bridges, and Parkes.'
The 1607 edition described in these pages is slightly different; it is the version engraved by W Hole for Camden's Britannia.
