Table of Symbols | |
Settlements are marked on Norden's map with a dot and circle,
there are additional elements coding the type of place. The table
of symbols is a key to these. Parks are shown by a fence; hills
and trees abound, rivers are clearly shown, with some bridges.
Obviously these are better pictured than described! In the explanation below, Norden's term, from his table of symbols, is in italic. | |
city; many buildings around the dot and circle, name in block caps. | |
MARKET TOWNES town; several buildings around the dot and circle, name in block caps. Notice the weathercock on the tower. | |
Parishes & places of cure village; a single tower or building to the left of the dot and circle, name in lower case. | |
Hamlets & villages hamlet; a short vertical line from the top of the dot and circle, name in lower case. | |
Chappells of ease chapel; a short vertical line, with a horizontal line to one side, ie half a cross, off the top of the dot and circle, name in lower case. Note about Holy ghost chapel in Camden's Britannia | |
Howses of bestericcite country house; a tower either side of the dot and circle, name in lower case; house of best reception. | |
Ordinarie howses of name lesser country house, just the dot and circle, name in lower case. A dot and circle might mark any sort of feature. | |
Places ruinate and decaid ruin; the dot and circle cancelled by a slash. | |
Castles castle; two towers with a flag, no dot and circle. | |
Old trenches and fortes hillfort (generally); a hatched circle like a modern tumulus symbol, with a flag. | |
Monasticall places monastic place a cross atop the dot and circle. | |
Beacons or beaukens beacon; a hill with beacon posts on top. Some are named. | |
Earlier version | Norden's manuscript for the map is in the
British Library, AddMSS 31.835:- A Chorographical Description of the severall Shires and islands of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Weighte, Gurnesey and Jersey, performed by the traveyle and view of John Norden, 1595 His original list of symbols included:- '... Howses of best receite, Ordinarie howses of means, ... Old trenches and fortes, ... Woody Places, Devision for Hundreds, Rivers, Bridges, and Parkes.' The 1607 edition described in these pages is slightly different; it is the version engraved by W Hole for Camden's Britannia. |
