... rivers step down hills by waterfalls; canals step down or up by locks ...
The Kennet and Avon Canal from mile 38 to 39 steps down 4 locks from the summit level to the long contour section called Fifteen Mile Pound which begins at Wootton Rivers. The Great Western Railway line to the south west is on the south of the canal. A small stream runs along the south side of the canal, westward, towards the Avon. The towpath is on the south side.

'I only came down here for a quiet lunch' sitting in the sun below Wootton Rivers Bridge and now he's having to cope with two Mormon lads on their 'mission'.
Wootton Rivers village lies to the northward; Manor Farm, St Andrew's Church, shops, post office (?still) and the Royal Oak, probably serving pub food. There is thatch everywhere. The part of the village to the south is called Flitwick.
The church was short of funds for necessary restoration work in the 1910s and the clock could not be attended to. The clock was rebuilt out of farm machinery and other scrap by Jack Spratt; the chapters on the dial are:- G L O R Y B E T O G O D.
